U-bicycle North America, Western Canada’s first station-less bicycle-sharing platform, has officially launched in Langford with eight virtual parking zone locations around the City.
This May, U-bicycle placed its first station at Belmont Residences. The property backs onto the Galloping Goose Trail and is biking distance to Langford Lake, regional parks and other convenient amenities, making this U-bicycle station a frequented stop for Langford residents.
The partnership between Belmont Residences and U-bicycle has been a smooth ride. They are sponsoring half of the network (30 bikes) and the other half is sponsored by the City of Langford.
“In our commitment to provide bikes as an amenity and not solely bike racks, we thought U-bicycle would be a great partnership with our master planned community,” said Marcela Corzo, Director of Development at Belmont Residences. “It just made sense to work with U-bicycle and connect the Langford community.”
U-bicycle has secured a few virtual parking locations with local retailers that are thrilled to have a station in front of or near their storefronts, in turn driving foot traffic to those locales. Remember that to complete your ride successfully, you need to park in these designated zones, otherwise there will be monetary penalties.
“This is a huge milestone for U-bicycle as we expand operations by introducing innovative technology to cities across the country,” CEO Grace Min of U-bicycle Canada said. U-bicycle launched its first North American operations in Victoria in October 2017 and has already expanded rapidly across the province. In mid-April, the City of Langford voted in favour of the U-bicycle initiative, due to its sustainable
U-bicycle’s unique model is unlike any other traditional bike-sharing service and is changing the bike-sharing user experience supported by their advanced beacon technology. It requires no fixed bicycle racks, which allows consumers to park the bikes in designated drop-off spots, locking and unlocking them, all within U-bicycle’s app.
Breaking news: U-Bicycle Canada also used the West Shore launch to announce their Ebike which is electronically assisted to help you climb hills and travel with ease up to 20 MPH. And hot on the heels is their EScooter! With their U-Power, you can charge your mobile device and electric bike anytime, anywhere! Mayor Stew Young was quick to jump to the front of the line to test out these great new technologies and of course provide some summer entertainment for the crowd cheering him on!
