’Tis the Season!

"It is only with the heart that one
can see rightly; what is essential
is invisible to the eye.”

—Antoine de Saint-Exupery,
The Little Prince

No matter which set of holidays you celebrate—or not—at this time of year, what makes it a special time is how it feels like everyone is making a collective effort in the final weeks of December to slow down and spend a few days in the company of people they love. It’s a reflective time, wistful and sentimental. A time when nostalgia bubbles up from Christmases past.

Except for many people, and for any number of reasons, the “most wonderful time of the year” represents none of these things. So, it was with this reality in mind that our December issue shines a bright light on the relatively invisible, and often unacknowledged, spirit of generosity in our community; specifically, the generosity of West Shore businesses and organizations. I sent out over 150 emails to ask various companies what they do to help others and where they perceive the need is the greatest at this time of year.

The response was immediate and enthusiastic; in fact, I had the challenging task of prioritizing a few select examples for my feature story. One thing’s for sure; the examples submitted confirmed to me that we live in a very generous, giving community, with varied programs, activities and events happening all the time— not just during the holiday season. Some commented that giving back contributed to their quickest and most lasting path to a happy, joyful spirit!

Supporting children, youth and adults is nothing new for non-profit organizations like the Pacific Centre Family Services Association [PCFSA]. They’ve been a West Shore community resource for over 50 years. If you’ve been blessed, this organization is especially in need your support at this time of year.

From all the staff here at GoWestShore Magazine, may your spirit find comfort in the laughter, blessings and love of family and friends. And remember to take some time for yourself, too!
