As a trusted Seniors Real Estate Specialist, I can help you make the right decision.
I work with many seniors & clients that have been in their home for years. The family is gone and they know they need to move into something smaller and with less maintenance. But just the thought of moving from a home is very overwhelming for them. Downsizing is especially daunting if they have been living in their current home for 20 years or more. It is like being a first-time buyer and seller all over again—not to mention the decades of accumulated stuff that built up over the years.
If you are considering downsizing, let me offer you some tips that can make your feelings about moving less stressful.
1. Start small
Go through things, one drawer, one closet, and one room at a time. Call your kids to come and pick up anything you have been storing for them through the years. Give them a deadline! If they don’t show up, call Goodwill.
2. Talk to your family about your plans to downsize
Do they even want the furniture or collectibles that have been in the family for years? Items that you thought you could pass down to them may not be something any of the children need or want.
3. Do you have a good Realtor® that you connect with and trust?
Is he/she someone that you feel will be patient with you throughout the process? Moving always takes a lot longer than you anticipate, so, you will need a supportive Realtor® with trusted resources to help you along the way.
4. View several homes
Let the Realtor® take you out to view potential homes for purchase, so you can feel comfortable that something will be out there for you when it’s time to move.
5. Should you buy or sell first?

You’ll be grateful in the long run that you began taking small steps now to ensure you won’t be trying to manage a move when times are less favourable, such as during a health crisis. Your family will also thank you!
