Looking ahead to find things to do as a family this summer and yet make it an experience that everyone can enjoy, too? Nothing is more magical than a shared, live musical experience. Forget the headphones, streaming music on your computer, CD player or car radio. How about taking your family to a place where music is the entire focus, where, enraptured by music, your everyday world dissolves into a symphony of glorious sound!
Sound like a fantasy? Like something you’d have to go to Vancouver to hear? Believe it or not, the quality of experience just described is available to West Shore residents this summer—right here in your own backyard! You won’t even have to travel to Victoria to share an exceptional evening of live classical music performed by Vancouver Island’s own Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO).
The SPO offers free concert admission to youth and children under 16. Here is an opportunity for your children or grandchildren to experience, firsthand, a selection of great music, played with skill and obvious joy by dedicated, talented musicians and singers. It’s an adventure as young minds evolve their musical interests and develop a life-long appreciation for a diversity of musical styles.
First-time audiences will surely be amazed by the virtuosity and quality of a SPO concert with its 20-year record of continuous performances. SPO is a critically-acclaimed, full orchestra with some 60 string, wind and percussion musicians
playing timeless, musical masterpieces. Since its inception, the orchestra has grown in size and virtuosity. It has also added a choral group and extended its season from one to five concerts annually, under the tutelage of its founder Maestro Norman Nelson. The West Shore Arts Council is the Title Sponsor for the Summer Symphony performance and “welcomes the rich talent of the SPO to our West Shore community”. The Council invites you to come and enjoy the orchestra’s presentation of Haydn, Brahms and Nielsen compositions.
