Victoria Shamrocks’ Forward Rhys Duch is all about giving back to his community. This year will be his 3rd time hosting the Shamrocks’ Annual Kids Spring Break Camp which runs from March 27-29 at the Eagle Ridge Arena. The spring break camp gives kids 7-14 the opportunity to heighten their skills, have fun and play with Victoria Shamrocks players in this 3-day camp along with an exclusive Victoria Shamrocks pinnie.
This year will be Rhys Duch’s 10th season with the Shamrocks. Rhys has lived in Victoria his whole life and played amateur lacrosse here. When asked about what he loves about living here he said, “It is a place where you can be outside all year round. I love that.” Duch received the Most Valuable Player award and an award for the Highest Scorer in 2016.
Rhys himself attended a Shamrocks kids’ camp when he was younger and when asked why he wanted to host it he said that “I always remember the camps and practices from when I was a kid
that the pros came out to put on. They helped develop the love and passion I have for the sport.” One of the best parts about putting on the kids’ camp is that “It’s fun to see a sport that’s given me so much and that I love so much. It’s fun to be able to pass that on”.
Rhys credits his dad and uncle for getting him into lacrosse at the age of 5 as they both played for the Shamrocks. As most Shamrocks players have told me, they love the comradery that comes with being a Shamrock. Playing the game is all about having fun and one of Rhys’s goals at the Spring Break Camp is for “kids to be smiling at the end of the day.” His other goal is to help players feel more confident. Rhys commented “You see more shy kids, by the end of the camp, come out of their shell a little bit.”
