In 2017, Victoria Shamrocks defender Ben McCullough won the ‘Most Popular Player Award’ as voted by the fans. He started playing lacrosse at the age of 10. McCullough says, “I have so much passion for the game. I’ve loved it ever since I started playing.” As a kid, McCullough enjoyed playing baseball. However, because his dad was a life-long lacrosse player, he encouraged his son to play both sports for a while before he settled on one. After his first year playing lacrosse, McCullough fell in love with the sport and never looked back.
McCullough has been a member of the Shamrocks for the past eight seasons. He says that not only are the players a team on the floor, but off the floor, too. This starts as soon as they step off the plane. McCullough says that from day one, team members pick you up from the airport and show you around town. His first welcome, when he arrived from Brampton, Ontario, was so memorable that he began to share the same experience with new members whenever he had the chance.
“After my first couple years, as soon as guys arrived, I’d meet up with them for dinner. Or if something was going on like the Langford fair or the Luxton fair, we would just take the day and go there with a bunch of guys. The guys start to gel as teammates—off the floor first.”
The team’s camaraderie on the floor is also reflected in the stands. McCullough says, “The games bring the West Shore community together. The community here is great. They always show up to watch our home games. You always see somebody you know. Everyone is so friendly. This makes for an enjoyable atmosphere for anyone who goes [to the games]. It’s an exciting date night and it’s [a great night out] for families too.”
• Ben’s favourite place for a date is the movie theater. His order is a Vitamin Water and mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.
• He’s had the same haircut (Mohawk) since the 3rd grade!
• If he had to choose between team chocolate or team candy, he’s on team chocolate side.
