Title: Colwood Garden Society

Describe the spirit and intention of your Group's cause:

The purpose of our society is to provide the space and to work with people in our community to grow more food in the region. This is accomplished by providing 26 garden boxes for $45 a year to interested residents of the Westshore. We also provide garden boxes to 4 classes at Wishart Elementary School, and the school uses the garden space as an outdoor classroom. Two gardens are set aside to provide fresh food to the Living Edge Market, a free market-style distribution centre for the disenfranchised residents of the Western Communities. One of the most remarkable outcomes of this garden is the community that it is building. People who had never met before have come together with a common goal, and built relationships with one another. Members assist each other with sharing of knowledge, seeds, plants and even helping each other with planting and watering. We are the only public community garden in both Colwood and Langford. Other community gardens are private, for a specific group such as a school, or residents of a condo building.
The Grant Funds will go towards building supplies to build a 25’x 70’ expansion to the existing community garden including:
  • Posts for fence
  • Nails, screws, and similar items
  • Deer fencing
  • Lumber to build garden boxes
  • Soil to fill garden boxes
  • Dumptruck slinger to fill the boxes with soil

How will this benefit your Group & the Community?

Presently we have a waiting list of 15 for a plot. With this expansion, we hope to provide 17 more garden plots for rental, more space to grow produce for the Living Edge, 2 wheelchair accessibility plots, and garden space for 4 classes at Dunsmuir Middle School. We can provide more space to grow fresh and healthy food, more space for education and relationship building, and more space for programs that will benefit the community through educating of our young people.
