Sports fans already know how excited they can get when they attend a live lacrosse game at the Q Centre. What they don’t see, however, is all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to make these games possible. That’s where Michelle Evans comes in. This is her second season as the Game Day Manager for the Victoria Shamrocks.
What does a Game Day Manager do?
A Game Day Manager oversees what goes on behind the scenes at Shamrocks’ games, in terms of entertainment, anthem singers, certain prizes, and volunteers. On game days, I’m responsible for making sure these people are where they need to be and doing what they need to be doing. I make sure that everyone who needs it has the correct documentation.
What does your schedule look like on game days?
Throughout the game, I’m finding people for prizes and prepping for intermissions so our entertainment and presenters know what they’re doing, how long they have, and where they need to go. This is all last minute because our
intermission entertainment usually has to be paired up with our T-shirt toss or the prize blimp flying around the stadium. After the second intermission, I help with the 50/50 table and with cleaning up.
What is the most challenging part of your job?
It’s making sure that absolutely everything is in place and that everyone is where they need to be, when they need to be there.
What part of your job is the most rewarding?
I love being part of something that is really quite intricate. It really is a great feeling when everything goes smoothly and the games go off without a hitch. But even when there is a glitch, it’s usually a small one. For the most part, everyone is so into the game that no one usually notices!
Would you like to volunteer and help Michelle make everything run smoothly on and off the game floor this season? Come and be part of the games team. Our first game in 2018 starts at home on May 25.
